Camouflage thats not a disguise

This completes the camouflage trilogy. Following the Rolls Royce and the Lambo, heres the Bentley. The name of the image file and the blog post where I found this image (which also features a delightful chrome object (Audi R8?)) indicate that this well-disguised luxury car belongs to that non-attention seeking, shy and demure footballer, Mario Balotelli. What a wondrous design.

The BMW X4 just isnt a proper off roader

THEY don’t make ‘em like they used to. It’s probably the most overused cliché in the classic car book, but in the case of one off-road encounter last weekend it’s definitely true.

The car in question was an old Land Rover – specifically, a 1969 Series IIA of the ex-military variety – which I encountered at a garage in Lancashire, which I couldn’t help but swoon over just slightly. When you’ve been raised around old Range Rovers and brought up to believe anything vaguely old from Lode Lane is cool, you can’t help it.

At least one mate of mine (you know who you are) just doesn’t get my fascination with old off-roaders but the great thing with old Land Rovers is they acquire a patina over decades which the new ones just don’t have. Whereas it’s right for someone with an MG or a Triumph to spend hours on end polishing their pride ‘n’ joy, a Series IIA without a thin coating of muck is like an Arctic explorer who doesn’t have a craggy face and a light helping of stubble. Yes, old off-roaders are slow and noisy and corner like ocean liners, but the important thing is that they’re hard as nails.

Or at least, they used to be, because when I got in that night I saw BMW’s latest take on the off-roader – the X4, which is a bit like an X6 and about as up for a spot of Arctic exploring as Gok Wan does. Yes, I know I drove an X3 last year and found it annoyingly brilliant, but deep down I’d still rather that old Series IIA be on my driveway.

Land Rover’s own 2013 offerings are still capable mudpluggers, of course, but judging by BMW’s evidence, at least, they definitely don’t make off-roaders like they used to.

the most evil bastard to ever straddle a saddle Stripe

If you are too young to have seen it, or never have for some other reason... get a copy. Its a Speilberg movie, for one... Phoebe Cates as the love interest, Hoyt Axton if you are a country music fan, and a very cool little sci fi movie premise if nothing else gets you to watch it. 1984s best movie I bet.

this is how to grab attention at a international auto show think outside the convention center! REO in 1927 Helsinki Auto Show

this, is a showroom built by the REO importer Mr Peltola, outside the auto show, to grab attention and isolate potential customers from the rest of the makers

Mr. Peltola the importer did not want to join the other car dealers at the show and decided to have his own display in a market square called Kasarmintori in Helsinki. A look inside the novelty shown in the middle photo above, demonstrates just how well the display showcased the product for the firm. At the far end can be seen a sales desk set up under and inside the cowl and hood. All show photos courtesy of perrasmotornostalgi via http://www.retronaut.com via http://theoldmotor.com/?p=112284

The board game that had a monopoly on my motoring childhood

NEWS that the iron has been steamed off the Monopoly board in favour of a cat does at least mean one good thing - the piece modelled on the classic car is there to stay.

In a brilliant bit of marketing Hasbro, the company which makes the board game, asked Facebooks ten million Monopoly fans to vote on what should be the newest piece - and what it should replace. They voted for a cat to join the latest version of the game, and although the car was among the pieces under threat it was the iron that eventually got the chop.

Jonathan Berkowitz, vice president for Hasbro gaming marketing, said: “I’m sad to see the iron go. Personally, I’m a big fan of the racecar so I’m very relieved it was saved but it is sad to see the iron go.

"Tokens are always a key part of the Monopoly game, and our fans are very passionate about their tokens, about which token they use while they play."

The car - which, Im led to believe was modelled on the game creators 1932 Ford Roadster - was also the piece I plumped for when I played the game with my fellow Simisters as a child, if only because it helped my petrolhead credentials at such a tender age.

As a result, I spent much of my childhood pushing an old car around while being mentally prepared to lose a lot of money. Something that has had absolutely no effect on my adult motoring life whatsoever...
